1911 Gold Borders

I love my  T-205 Christy Mathewson but did you know that there were other gold bordered cards produced in 1911?

The T-99 Sights and Scenes of the World series is gold bordered and pretty nice.  I wonder if they were printed by the same company.  I know there are also some gold bordered bird cards out there as well.

Some cards just seem like classics to me and this is one.  It's Rusty's 2nd Topps card and first on his own.

A Collector Collects -- A New Feature on CHTMC

Why do we collect things?  Is it an instinct?  Is it true that everyone collects something?  I collect sports cards, but my collecting doesn't end there.  A collector likes to collect.

Here's one of my collections, one that I share with my wife.  We have a nine hole golf course near us that is part of a larger park.

There is a path that circles the golf course with predominantly low fencing around it.  Occasionally an errant shot will land a ball outside the fencing near the path.  Typically my wife and I will make 2-3 loops around.  Like an Easter egg hunt we look for the lost golf balls.  It adds an element of fun to walking.  Who will spot one first?  How many can we find?  Our record is seven in one day.  Now that winter is here in a big way hunting season is officially over.

While it's nice to find a shiny new Slazenger or TopFlite the most fun is a ball that has some sort of logo on it.  Here are the one's we've come across:

These are two 2001 Royal Rookies I  got in a box lot.

Brian Schmack, a Chicago native, spent 10 years in the minors and had a brief stint as a reliever for the Detroit Tigers in 2003 where he was 1-0 in 11 games.

J.J. Putz is obviously more well known.  In 2007 he won 6 games and saved 40 for the Seattle Mariners.  Last season, with the White Sox, he went 7-5 with a 2.83 ERA.  He is currently a free agent who may end up with the Diamondbacks.  According to Wikipedia,  J.J. (Jason Joseph by the way) was a dorm-mate of Tom Brady at the University of Michigan.

Baseball meets "Rodeo"

I can't say that I'm a fan of ballet but this card reminded me of Aaron Copeland and Agnes DeMille's, Rodeo.

Ray played in 20 games for the San Diego Padres in 1993 and 1994.  He had 10 hits in 45 at-bats with three walks and 14 strikeouts.

Wall Display

A few years ago I was looking for a way to display some of my cards.  There are some nice wall displays out there but they're a bit pricey for me and the ones from the craft store are kind of the opposite.  I'm not all that handy with tools but I managed tocobble together this shadowbox that as you can see will comfortably display forty or so cards.  I change it out every now and then and since hockey season started I filled it with some of my favorite vintage cards.
