Leap Day Babies

Today is a special day for some of you out there.  I must be weird to only see your actual birthdate come up just once every four years.  I don't know if it makes you feel special or bums you out.  Here are three legends and one current player who belong to your club.

I don't know if this was just a mistake or if there has ever been any confusion over "Flip's" birthdate.

Autographed Cards A-Z Hockey Edition R

When I got back into collecting five or so years ago one of the things that excited me was the availability of autographed cards.  Perhaps I went a little overboard but I think I picked up some nice cards.  This will be an A-Z series of posts with varying numbers of cards.

Just two this time, one a Hall of Famer the other a future Hall of Famer?  Between them they span six decades from 1955-2009.

Wall Display

A few years ago I was looking for a way to display some of my cards.  There are some nice wall displays out there but they're a bit pricey for me and the ones from the craft store are kind of the opposite.  I'm not all that handy with tools but I managed tocobble together this shadowbox that as you can see will comfortably display forty or so cards.  I change it out every now and then and since hockey season started I filled it with some of my favorite vintage cards.

Here are the cards from the top row, (Topps 1971-72):

Parkhurst Retro Favorites Montreal Canadiens

It's hard to believe but for the quarter century prior to 1967 the NHL consisted of only six teams, the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings and Blackhawks.

In the mid-nineties, Parkhurst commemorated the 1964-65 NHL season by producing a set of "Tall Boy" cards featuring players and coaches from the "Original Six" teams. I'll be sharing my favorites in coming posts.

Here are my favorites from the Montreal Canadiens:

#87 Toe Blake

#81 Lorne Worsley

#80 Red Berenson

#83 Terry Harper

#85 Jean Beliveau

#67 Henri Richard

#70 Claude Provost

#74 J.C. Tremblay

#75 Yvan Cournoyer

#76 Jean-Guy Talbot

#86 Bill Hicke

#82 Charlie Hodge
