Ice Brothers Autographs Part 1

My perception is that there have always been more brothers in the NHL than in any of the other major sports.  Here's my favorite pair of siblings both of whom have nice signatures.

Here's a great video featuring Bobby showing off his devastating shot.  I was only 7 at the time but I know all those guys names, particularly the Blackhawks but most of the Leafs as well.

Tomorrow I'll have another set of brothers, both Hall of Famers.

Here Come the Hawks *update*

As they enter tonight's game against rival Detroit the Chicago Blackhawks are a perfect 5-0.  That ties the 1971-72 team for the franchise record for consecutive wins to begin a season. UPDATE:  The Blackhawks killed off six power plays including a 5-3 and won the game in overtime 2-1 to set a new franchise record, 6-0.  In honor of both teams here are nine of the old guys on their classic 1971-72 Topps cards.

Here Come the Hawks, the mighty Blackhawks
Take the attack, Yeah, and we'll back you Blackhawks
You're flyin' high now, so let's wrap it up
Let's go you Hawks, move off
Now all look out, Here Come the Hawks,
Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here come the Hawks

Here they come movin', weavin', flyin' high and throwin' spray,
Blades flashin' sticks crashin' tryin' for the play,
And the Blackhawks, take control,
There's a shot, AND A GOAL!

Here Come the Hawks, the mighty Blackhawks
Take the attack, Yeah, and we'll back you Blackhawks
You're flying high now, so let's wrap it up
Let's go you Hawks, move off
Now all look out, Here Come the Hawks
Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here come the Hawks

Here Come the Hawks, the mighty Blackhawks
Take the attack, Yeah, and we'll back you Blackhawks
You're flying high now, so let's wrap it up
Let's go you Hawks, move off
Now all look out, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks,
Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks,
Here Come the Hawks, Here Come the Hawks, Here (trails off)

Autographed Cards A-Z Hockey Edition H

When I got back into collecting five or so years ago one of the things that excited me was the availability of autographed cards.  Perhaps I went a little overboard but I think I picked up some nice cards.  This will be an A-Z series of posts with varying numbers of cards.

I'll probably never get  a Wayne Gretzky autograph but I have this card featuring two Hall of Famers that played with him.
2005-06 In the Game 28/34

Mr. Goalie, #1, Hall of Famer and a member of the Blackhawks Stanley Cup Winners in 1961.
2002 Topps Archives Reprint #8

I actually got this one to replace the one above which was lost in the mail at the time.  Bonus Hall.
2004-05 UD Legends Classic #M33 033/125

This card is not in good shape but Hay was a teammate of Hall's on the 1961 Hawks.
1961-62 O-Pee-Chee #35

If you've been following along you'll get that I collect players from the early 1970's Bruins Stanley Cup teams.
2005 UD Artifacts #AF-KH 027/100

Mr. Hockey
2007 UD Ultimate Signatures #US-GH

Ranger great and Hall of Famer.

Blow Out the Candles Nov 19

2004 UD Sweet Spot Classic #73

HOFer Roy Campanella was born on this date in 1921. The 3 time MVP helped the Brooklyn Dodgers win their only World Series Championship in 1955. His career was ended when an automobile accident in January, 1958 left him paralyzed. The Dodgers retired Campy's #39 in 1972.

1971-72 Topps #85

Former Chicago Blackhawks star Dennis Hull is celebrating his 65th birthday today. Overshadowed by brother Bobby, Dennis did appear in 5 All-Star games and finished his 14 year career with 303 goals.

Dennis Hull is very funny!

Actor Alan Young turns 90 today. Best known for his role as Wilbur Post in the 60's TV show Mr. Ed, he became a voice actor for animated characters later in his career. He is the voice of Scrooge McDuck in Disney's Duck Tales. He was also David Filby in the 1960 film, The Time Machine.

2004 Donruss Playoff Honors #255FG-5 (My wife's card)

CNN talk show host Larry King is 76 today.

I know it's easy to mock Larry but he does ask the questions I would ask.

Another talk show host with a birthday today, Dick Cavett is turning 73 . A big fan of the Marx Brothers he actually became friends with Groucho in Groucho's later years. I loved his 1970's PBS show where he would have just one guest. For some reason I remember appearances by authors such as John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates.

Parkurst Retro Chicago Blackhawks

It's hard to believe but for the quarter century prior to 1967 the NHL consisted of only six teams, the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings and Blackhawks.

In the mid-nineties, Parkhurst commemorated the 1964-65 NHL season by producing a set of "Tall Boy" cards featuring players and coaches from the "Original Six" teams. I'll be sharing my favorites in coming posts.

Here are my favorites from the Chicago Blackhawks:

#43 Billy Reay

#33 Eric Nesterenko

#32 Glenn Hall

#31 Pierre Pilote

#29 Phil Esposito

#28 Denis DeJordy

#26 Stan Mikita

#39 Dennis Hull

#38 Doug Jarrett

#24 Chico Maki

#23 Ken Wharram

#25 Bobby Hull

#42 Bill Hay
