Flipped!

I recently shared some of the cards from a blaster of Topps Winter Olympic cards.  I purposely left out the hit.  It turned out to be a pretty good one.  Noelle won a silver medal.

As nice as this card is (and I do have the base card) I don't own it anymore.  By the time Noelle won her medal I had sold the card on ebay.  While it was listed I found the three items below for what turned out to be just about the same amount of money I made on the card.

The 2006 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards lists these as "1969 Tasco All-Star Collection Caricatures".  Of the 46 posters 9 are Chicago Cubs.  They're an impressive 11-1/2" x 16" and cost under a dollar when issued.  They were  sold shrinkwrapped and  backed by cardboard.  I already have the Beckert and Santo in their original state as well as three others.  They've been in my "I'll post these some day" stack.  The great thing about these three, other than that I did not have the Hundley, is that they were custom framed.  Judging by the condition they were probably framed back when they came out.

Three vintage framed posters of Cubs legends I grew up with for a sticker auto of an Olympian?  Noelle could have won gold and I'd still be happy with this "flip".  What do you think?  Do you have a favorite flip?

Ebay Bargains Mark Grace

Here's another of my 11 cents shipped ebay purchases.  What's not to like?  Great photo, full bleed, nothing too obtrusive in the design.

I'm more of a fan of complete yearly stats but at least there's a second photo on the back.

Happy Valentines Day From the NFL

I have no idea why but four of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks of all time wish you a Happy Valentine's Day.

A Quintessential Baseball Card

Is this not the quintessential Frank Robinson card?  It's his first wearing an Orioles uniform.  It's on arguably the best Topps design of the 1960's.  The back notes his rookie of the year award, triple crown season, World Series MVP and his being the first player to win the MVP in both leagues (he still is).  I picked it up on ebay recently for $3.60 shipped.

Here's to the Ladies!

I haven't watched any of the Olympics yet but I'm sure I'll be tuning in here and there.  A few weeks back I picked up a blaster of Topps Winter Olympics cards.  One of the draws of this set is the inclusion of women athletes on an even footing with their male counterparts.  Here's a sampling in no particular order.

Say Hey!

I've seen two bloggers show off copies of Hank Aaron's 1955 Bowman Blue Sapphire reprint in recent days.  I picked one up as well for 50 cents.  I also found this one for six cents more.  It's an intense young Willie Mays.  Mays would win the NL Rookie of the Year in 1951.  He had a nice year, but his closest competition (not really close) were two pitchers, Chet Nichols and Clem Labine.  Mays would really get started in 1954 after missing most of two years of military service.  If not for that time missed there's a good chance Aaron would have needed to eclipse him as the all-time home run king.

Mini Collection -- Alshon Jeffery

I was so impressed this season by Bears' wide receiver Alshon Jeffery that I decided to build a mini collection of his cards.   In his sophomore season Alshon's 89 receptions were 10th best and his 1,421 yards were 6th best in the NFL.  If you're a Bears fan or you watch Sportscenter you've seen some of his spectacular catches.

Happy Groundhog Day

I don't know about you but this is about the worst winter I can remember.  I sure hope the groundhog does not see his shadow today.

"Lighthouses Blow No Horns; They Only Shine"

Every now and then I check Ebay for 1911 T77 Hassan Lighthouses cigarette cards.  The nice condition graded ones are too rich for my blood and there are sometimes inexpensive ones but in  poorer condition than I like.  I picked up these four recently for about $5.00.  I think that brings my total to just eight out of fifty.  I previously posted three of them, here, and here.  While I love getting complete sets of tobacco cards I'm usually fine with a sampling.  It's the variety of subjects that I really love.
