Big Cards Need Love Too -- #'s 51-55

I guess I'm in the minority but I think these 3-1/2" x 5", 1983 Donruss Action All-Stars are nice.   Here they are in numerical order. (Click to enlarge particularly if you want to read the backs).

If the comments I've been getting on the first half of the set are any indication these cards do have some fans.  Anyone want to comment that doesn't like them?

Joe went 17-12 in 1982 for the 5th place Astros.  I still think the rainbow jerseys are great.

The portrait is good here but what a lousy action shot!

Fernandomania was in full swing in 1983.  I don't think the helmet is particularly flattering.

"Pitch at risk to Richie Zisk."  What a great slogan.  It was in use when Richie was part of "the South Side Hitmen" in 1977 with the White Sox.  I remember him killing the Cubs when he was with the Pirates.

Leon looked like he was going to be a superstar but never quite got there.  He made a key error in the 1984 NLCS loss to the Padres.

Most of us started collecting cards when we were kids, like the ones in this class photo.  In fact, Hackenbush is one of the kids in in this photo.

Card Fun at the Mall

I went to a local mall the other day with my wife.  I found 5 markdown packs at Target which I'll post soon.  On our way to Target we saw the normal machines, ice cream, gumballs etc, but low and behold what else did I see?  A card machine? Yes!  It was a two-sided affair with 4 offerings including a baseball and a hockey, along with some kids stuff.  The machine said it was 25 cents for 4 cards.  Neither my wife nor I had any quarters.  That's why I bought the packs at Target, to get 5 quarters.  Ok, I wanted the packs, too.  So we went back to the machine and dropped a quarter in the baseball card slot.  Eight cards!  Well that's much better than four.  Another quarter, another eight cards.  OK, let's try the Hockey.  Fifteen cards.  Again, fifteen cards.  Cool!  Back to the baseball for the last quarter and eight more cards.  So all told, $1.25 for 54 cards and some fun at the mall with my wife.  Not too bad.

The baseball cards I got were all 1992 either Fleer Ultra or Pinnacle.  The Pinnacle were better.  Here are my favorites.  Click to enlarge, if you're so inclined.

I get a 5/5 red back, and it's Jack Dunn.  My luck!  

The Heyward mini is nice but the regular size card was already my favorite in pack 4 so props have to go to Hall of Fame Negro League pioneer Rube Foster standing in a beautiful fall scene.
