A Cup of Joe

Name a famous athlete named Joe. The first one that comes to my mind is Joltin' Joe DiMaggio.  Do people still remember him as Mr. Coffee?  I do.

Here are another handful of Hall of Fame Joe's.

Torre and McCarthy rank #5 and #8 on the list of winningest managers in baseball history.  They led their teams to 4,451 wins.  They went to 15 World Series and won 11.  Of yeah, Joe Torre was a 9 time all-star as a player.

T

Another Joe-ish Hall of Famer, Morgan was a 10 time All-Star and 2 time World Series Champion.

I have a couple of football Joe's.   The first Joe that comes to mind is no average Joe by any stretch of the imagination.  Another New York icon, "Broadway Joe" led his AFL Jets to the shocking Super Bowl III win in 1969.

While not as charismatic as Namath, Joe Montana had the more spectacular career, winning 4 Super Bowls in San Francisco.

Who are your top Joe's?

Blow Out the Candles April 21

Hall of Fame Yankees skipper Joe McCarthy was born in Philadelphia, PA on this date in 1887.

McCarthy's "10 Commandments for Success in the Majors":
Nobody ever became a ballplayer by walking after a ball.
You will never become a .300 hitter unless you take the bat off your shoulder.
An outfielder who throws in back of a runner is locking the barn after the horse is stolen.
Keep your head up and you may not have to keep it down.
When you start to slide, SLIDE. He who changes his mind may have to change a good leg for a bad one.
Do not alibi on bad hops. Anyone can field the good ones.
Always run them out. You never can tell.
Do not quit.
Try not to find too much fault with the umpires. You cannot expect them to be as perfect as you are.
A pitcher who hasn't control hasn't anything.
