Here's a card of one bad ass pitcher in his prime.  He looks kind of baby faced here but he was a baby faced assassin on the mound.  Don't you dare crowd the plate or you know what you'll get.

This Griffey must have been in a box lot I got about a year ago.  It has an awesome image, presumably of one of Junior's 630 home runs.  (Of course it could be he's watching one go foul.)  The things about this card you really don't get from the scan is that it's about three cards thick and has a surface almost like glass.

Card of the Day -- Buck Up!

Apparently the photographer told Buck to imagine that his dog just got run over by a car or something.  Why he would do that I don't know.  Damned sadistic photographers!

 Coincidentally this is Buck's picture on Wikipedia.  Not much different, minus the bad mustache.  Very distinguished actually but still sour looking.

 I did find evidence that Buck can and does smile.

Card of the Day

Not a bad group.  Tebbets was the Manager of the Year in 1956 and as a player was a 4 time All-Star himself.  Ed Bailey was a 7 time All-Star and of course, Frank Robinson was a 14 time All-Star and is in the Hall of Fame.

The card features the trio wearing a road uniform Cincinnati used for just one season, 1956.  It seems that when they switched from sleeved uniforms to sleeveless they couldn't bear to lose Mr. Redlegs so they moved him to the front.

Gail Goodrich

Gail Goodrich was a big part of the LA Lakers teams that beat my Bulls in three straight Western Conference Semi-Finals series in the early 1970's, twice in 7 game series.
Is the fact that I wanted this card an example of "identification with the aggressor"?

This was a recent Ebay purchase, $3.55 + s/h

Gail was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.

Card of the Day -- Too Cliche?

This was  2 time Cy Young award winner Brett Saberhagen's first year in New York.    Maybe the apple thing is cliche but it beats another shot of a pitcher delivering the ball to home plate.

Card of the Day -- Sid Gordon

This was just going to be a regular old Card of the Day post until I saw a post from one of my favorite bloggers who made a comment that made me think a bit (no I didn't hurt myself).  He thought it "weird" that Topps would put out a card like this, connecting two players by their religious background.

 I don't think it's weird at all.  I'm not going to attempt to write a thesis here but guys like Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax have meant a lot to Jews, especially sports minded Jewish boys and I would think this continues today.  I'm aware that Ryan Braun is Jewish and there is a measure of cultural pride I take in his accomplishments.  By putting out this card Topps is honoring not only the players but their fans.

That being said here's another great Jewish ballplayer, Sid Gordon on his 1953 Topps card.

Most of the autographed cards in my collection are the card company certified variety.  Here's an exception:

I think I just wanted this signed card because I like Bobby's last name which is pronounced, kuh-NOPP.

Bobby took his great fielding skills with him to the majors where he won three consecutive Gold Gloves (1966-1968).
