Blow Out the Candles September 5

Cleveland great, second baseman Napolean Lajoie was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on this date in 1874.

I inherited the card above from my Dad along with a small group of other cigarette cards all of which I treasure. (The white mark by Nap's right leg must have been of the scanner.)

Nap had a lifetime batting average of .339 and 3252 hits. He was inducted into the HOF's second class in 1937.
From Line-up for Yesterday by Ogden Nash:

L is for Lajoie
Whom Clevelanders love,
Napolean himself,
With glue in his glove.

Random Relic Sunday

When I got back into collecting,  relic cards were all the rage and I accumulated a box full.  I've highlighted some series here and here and  there but certainly not all of them.

Bill Mazeroski played his entire 17 year career with the Pirates, winning two World Series.  He was a 7-time All-Star and won 8 Gold Gloves.  He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001.

Do It Yourself COMC Pack #16/35

I (not so recently now) had 8 months worth of Check Out My Cards purchases shipped.  I divided the 153 cards into 35 groups.  I like to think of these as hand picked "packs".   I'm posting them in random order.  "Pack" #16, 5 cards, was $1.69 including shipping.

Here we have a nice handful of Topps Triple threads, the first four from 2010, the last 2009.  Hard to beat 5 serial numbered Hall of of Famers for less than 2 bucks.  I like the colorized old photos.  Do you?

2001 Sunoco Dream Team

I picked up this oddball set on Ebay for 25 cents plus shipping.  According to "The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards" these cards were sold in three-card packs for 49 cents with a gasoline or Coke purchase.  Other than being on thin card stock they're pretty nice.  I love the titles on the back.  They remind me of the 1960's combo cards.
