Chicago Baseball Parks 1937

Baseball season is almost here.  Spring training games begin in less than two weeks. Opening Day is about 6 weeks away.  The White Sox, who look to have an exciting team, will not be playing in Comiskey Field.  Did the Sox ever play in Comiskey Field?  As far as I know it was always Comiskey Park.  The Cubs, as they have been since 1916, will be playing in Wrigley Field.

This card dates from 1937.  I tried my best to figure out where the Wrigley image came from.  I had no luck at all.  Was it taken from an actual photograph?  Note all the fans standing on the field.   Can anyone date it?

  1. Very interesting!
My guess is it’s from a real picture, but I’ve never seen that one before. It has to be after the 1927 season because that’s when the upper deck was finished. It’s not a World Series because the Cubs built extra bleachers for those in '29, '32, and '35. The fans on the field are puzzling. I don’t think they did that beyond the mid Thirties. So my best guess would be between 1928 and 1932.

    1. I was thinking maybe it was an Opening Day. The angle doesn't help. The white lines in left seem exaggerated.

    1. It's definitely a baseball game. If you look closely you can see the players. Also when the Bears played there was barely (no pun intended) room for the gridiron let alone fans.

  3. Can't help with your question... but that post card is sweet!

    1. It seems to be less plentiful than some of the others.

  4. Very cool postcard, and Comiksey "Field" does sound odd. I've seen video and photographs of fans lined up in the outfield like that but it was in the early days of the World Series. Maybe they were still doing that in the '30s, I'm not sure.

    1. Guess we may never know. The mystery only makes the card more fun.
