Rest in Peace Doug Buffone

I was watching the Blackhawks-Preds game just now when they mentioned that the sad news that former Bears linebacker and broadcaster Doug Buffone had died unexpectedly.  "Stop yourself!"

It's the White Sox But I Still Like It

I just picked up this signed 8x10 glossy photo of Ron Santo.  Ronnie hated his time with the Sox so much that he walked away from a guaranteed year's pay at a substantial sum rather than play out his contract in 1975.  Nevertheless, this photo does represent the last chapter in his Hall of Fame career.  It's a nice portrait with an inscription and I do like it.  Do you have a favorite player who switched teams late in his career?  Do you make a distinction when collecting?

Hey Buddy!

Howard Megdal's, The Baseball Talmud ranks Buddy Myer as the fifth best Jewish baseball player of all time and the #1 second baseman.  His 2.131 hits puts him at the top of the all-time list (Shawn Green is second).  Bill James reported that Myer told his local paper near the end of his life that he was not Jewish at all but it has be accepted by most sources that his father, Charles Solomon Myer was Jewish though his mother Maud was not.

All that aside I recently added this beautiful 1934-36 Diamond Stars card to my collection.  Jew or not Jew I still like my little Buddy.

Captain Serious

It's a pretty great time a year for sports fans.  March Madness just ended and it's Opening Day today for baseball.  We're approaching the NBA Playoffs and maybe my favorite, the long quest for the Stanley Cup.  My Chicago Blackhawks have won twice as many games as they've lost and are only five points behind the Ducks and Rangers for the best record in the NHL.  And yet it hasn't seemed like a great year.  The team has sputtered offensively and just hasn't seemed as sharp as they'd like to be.  The league has so much parity that I'd be afraid to make any bets on who will end up winning it all.

Here's a mini collection of the Hawks' captain, Jonathan Toews that I picked up on COMC last Black Friday.
