International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day.  Here are nine women who had notable achievements in sport and in some cases well beyond.

I found all of these in that box of random goodness I posted a few days ago.

Do you have a female athlete that you most like or admire?

  1. Out of the ones you showed, Steffi Graf was my favorite. She seems almost forgotten now, which is amazing. She was so dominant.

    1. I think once the Williams sisters arrived a lot of the previous group was forgotten. Did you ever read Andre Agassi's memoir, "Open"? It was surprisingly good and, in part, tells the story of his love affair with Steffi, "Stephanie" to him.

  2. When I was younger, my mom enjoyed watching the Olympics... so I enjoyed rooting for Mary Lou Retton, Janet Evans, and of course... Kristi Yamaguchi. These days... my favorite female Olympian would be Chloe Kim. Other female athletes that come to mind would be Alex Morgan, Asuka, Paula Creamer, and Brandi Chastain.

    1. I looked up Chloe Kim. Competitive snowboarding is wild.

  3. What a great grouping. This post is just reaffirmation that Sports Illustrated for Kids does the absolute best job in the industry of covering a wide range of athletes from ALL sports, even outside the "big four" in the US.

    1. I agree. I had more of them with different sports but given the premise I went with the lengends.

  4. Night Owl makes a good point about Steffi Graf being forgotten. I suppose young people will only know her as the woman Elliot Gould says has a "quite a tush" on an episode of Friends.

I suppose Naomi Osaka is my favorite female athlete these days. Also one of my former students is on the women's soccer team at Yale, although she wasn't on the roster for last season. When I was younger my favorite was the gymnast Julianne McNamara (who later married Todd Zeile).

    1. Future husband Andre Agassi said that Brook Shields coveted Steffi's legs.
