It's not National Trading Card Day but I came across these and felt they were blogworthy at any time.  You can't go wrong with six of the best  and most popular players of our time. 

Meet the Metz

Do you like oddball sets?   If so, this should fit the bill.  It was issued by the Metz Baking Company in 1993.

This nice tin came with forty cards.  I'm showing the fifteen Hall of Fame players.  Not sure how they were executed but the images are well done.  The design is just ok.  At least there are two background colors.  Four would have been better.  Of course they lack logos.  If you collect any of these players you'd probably want a copy.  The backs are lackluster so I've included them at the end.

On This Day in Sports History -- The Great One

On this date in 1994 Wayne Gretzky became the NHL's All-Time Goal Scoring Leader with 802.

 

Of course, The Great One passed Mr. Hockey that night in 1994.  "Records are made to be broken."  

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh my!

Dating back to 1868, Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo is one of a handful of the oldest in the United States.  Here's a trio of postcards dating from 1910 to 1923.

"I fed it -- Not."

The sender saw two plays while in Chicago.  The first was "Sally", which opened at the Colonial Theater the previous month.  That theater was torn down in 1924.  Here's a great photograph.
