Happy Valentines Day?

My wife and I don't actually celebrate Valentine's Day.  The cynic in me sees it as an over-commercialized  excuse for companies to guilt us into buying cards, flowers, chocolates etc. at marked up prices.  It's not that I don't love my wife or enjoy giving her gifts. (Truth be told I did buy her a couple of bags of Ghirardelli  heart chocolates yesterday.  The dark chocolate sea salt hearts are her current favorite.)  I just don't like feeling that it's an obligation.  I'm probably in the minority.  Is there a Cranky Old Men Anonymous?

On a more positive note here are some Valentine related cards.

I like to play up my crankyness but I really am just a sentimental old fool.  My postcard collection includes about a hundred early 20th century romantic images.  I saw this one and loved illustration.  It dates from around 1906.

This card actually deserves it's own post.  You may see it again.

Bob Love's #10 jersey was the second in Bull's history to be retired (Jerry Sloan's #4 was first).  He was a key member of the first Bulls teams I remember watching as a kid.  These days he's the Director of Community Affairs and Goodwill Ambassador for the Bulls.

There have certainly been times in my life when Valentine's Day was sad and lonely.

Mr. Valentinetti turned 92 last September.  As you can see Vito is in the "played on both Chicago teams" club.  I think this photograph is from his time with the Cubs.  He wore #57 on the North Side.
If you're alone today, have some chocolate.  If you're in love, have some chocolate.  Chocolate's always good.  (Unless you can't eat it for medical reasons).  What's your favorite chocolate?

  1. See's was a big deal in my childhood, but I haven't had any in years.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers are my favorites in the 'basic' category.

Were the Senators' starting pitchers not pulling their weight? Seems like shade is being thrown.

    1. "First in war, first in peace, and last in the American League". I'm sure they needed lots of help in all areas.

  2. I'm in love AND I'm alone...because pandemic. (We're on the phone a lot.) Do I get twice as much chocolate?

So many chocolates I love. Start with Reese's, Take 6, Heath bars. Lindt or Ghirardelli dark chocolates are always good, too.

    1. Oh no! Hope everyone is ok. As much chocolate as you can get. Heath bars are underrated. I love Lindt's Lindor balls (Lindt Balls), but I'm a milk chocolate guy.

  3. I definitely would join a club called Cranky Old Men Anonymous...although I did but my wife a dozen roses. It temporarily distracts her from the amount of cards in the house.

    1. My wife brought home a piece of chocolate cake from the grocery store so I have her to two bags of Ghiradelli. We're lucky our wives put up with our collections.

  4. I like pretty much anything chocolate but Reese's PB cups are my fav.

We don't do anything for Valentine's day either, we don't even buy anything for each other. It was a regular Sunday around here. I spent most of the day scanning cards and a couple small house projects.

    1. I think I like the Reese's minis better than the full size. I hate their commercials with the "Not Sorry" tag line.

  5. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are my overall #1 pick, but I recently got hooked up with some Dove Promises... what are pretty darn good.

    1. Yes, for me, Dove is the best. I think Hershey changed the recipe on their Kisses years ago and they're not as smooth. I actually e-mailed them and got a response. They didn't deny changing the formula but said something vague about always looking to make their product good.

  6. Heath bars are probably my personal favorite, though York peppermint patties and Junior Mints are up there as well. Love the image on that first Valentine's postcard, awesome!

    1. Have you ever had Frango Mints? They were sold at Marshall Fields in Chicago. Now Macy's sells them. Very strong peppermint. They were a Christmas tradition for us. I actually prefer another Chicago favorite, Fanny May Candies' Mint Meltaways. They were a little milder. Two votes for Heath. Interesting. I'm definitely going to do a follow-up on that postcard.
