Marx Brothers Poster Cards
It should go without saying that I'm a big Marx Brothers fan. I have been since the 70's. I wish I could say I have some hugely awesome collection of memorabilia. Most of what I have is books. I learned about these cards from a post by Corky at Pack War two years ago. I recall looking at the individual cards on ebay. I ended up getting a complete set of 72 cards for $8.00 shipped. As you can see from the backs, the set includes a strange mishmash of Stars, Monsters and Comedy. The Duck Soup poster looks like it belongs in the monster genre if you ask me. I'm not sure where they found all of the images. Anyway here are the five Marx Brothers representatives. I doubt anyone will take the time to watch all the videos but those from the first three movies are cinema classics. I wouldn't waste my time on the last two. I think they made them primarily to cover Chico's gambling debts.
The mirror scene in Duck Soup is classic.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen the episode of The Lucy Show (or one of her TV series) where Lucille Ball and Harpo recreate the scene? (And of course there's the scene during the credits of The Patty Duke Show.)
I have seen it. Two great physical comedians together. The thing that has bothered me about the original scene ever since it was pointed out is that the mirror gets broken and the shards magically disappear. I love the lemonade stand scene. Silly and hysterical.
DeleteI found out about these during a random COMC trip a few months ago. Problem is the ones over there are kinda overpriced, so I'm holding out for cheaper copies. May have to cave, though, because I love, love, LOVE the Marx Bros. The bridge scene from "Animal Crackers" is an all-time cinematic classic (as are so many others from their canon).
ReplyDelete"We just play for small stakes". "And-a french fried potatoes?"
DeleteI remember your Marx Brothers recommendation on one of my posts and I tried watching one of the movies... maybe Duck Soup. But couldn't get into it. Just tried watching a few clips from this post and nothing again. I'm obviously familiar with them and accept their place in film history, but it's not my thing. That being said... I have a handful of Breygent movie poster trading cards and really like them.
ReplyDeleteLike kissing your sister, eh? That's alright. We all have our favorites.
