Wall Display

A few years ago I was looking for a way to display some of my cards.  There are some nice wall displays out there but they're a bit pricey for me and the ones from the craft store are kind of the opposite.  I'm not all that handy with tools but I managed tocobble together this shadowbox that as you can see will comfortably display forty or so cards.  I change it out every now and then and since hockey season started I filled it with some of my favorite vintage cards.

Three Bears

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 1985 Bears Super Bowl Championship.  They had perhaps the most dominating run in playoff history following back to back shutouts against the Giants and Rams with their 46-10 win in Super Bowl XX.  Here are three members of that awesome group on 1990 Score cards:

Santo Saturdays

The two best third basemen of my childhood were Brooks Robinson in the AL and Ron Santo in the NL.
Santo's numbers compare favorably to Robinson's but remember that Ron played for 15 seasons while Brooks played 23.  Longevity is laudable but bear in mind that Santo was diagnosed with diabetes in his rookie year and battled it daily for his entire career as he does to this day.  That should count for something too.  Santo gets another crack at the Hall of Fame next year.

Winnings from Play at the Plate

Recently I won a contest at  Play at the Plate.  The prize he was offering was two packs of 2010 Topps Chrome.

Drew Butera's father, Sal played for the Twins in the 1980.  They are the only father-son duo in the teram's history.

Brian wanted to sweeten the pot so he also included a couple dozen of these Fleer Greats.  You can't have too many cards and in particular you can't have too many cards of Hall of Famers.

Not satisfied yet, Brian filled a box with a complete set of Topps 2010 series 1.  These are likely old hat to most of you but I only bought a couple packs when they came out so they're new to me.  Here are some of my favorites:

Gail Goodrich

Gail Goodrich was a big part of the LA Lakers teams that beat my Bulls in three straight Western Conference Semi-Finals series in the early 1970's, twice in 7 game series.
Is the fact that I wanted this card an example of "identification with the aggressor"?

Gail was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.

Card of the Day -- Too Cliche?

This was  2 time Cy Young award winner Brett Saberhagen's first year in New York.    Maybe the apple thing is cliche but it beats another shot of a pitcher delivering the ball to home plate.

The great Sid Luckman was born in Brooklyn on this date in 1916. The last great Chicago Bears quarterback, he led the team to four NFL Championships in the 1940's. He was elected to the HOF in 1965.

This was taken on October 5, 1940 at the Polo Grounds in New York.

Surrealist artist Rene Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium on this date in 1898.
