Blow Out the Candles -- November 4

HOFer Bobby Wallace was born on this date in 1873. "Rhody" played 24 seasons, his best with the St. Louis Browns, but never made it to the World Series. He was possibly the best defensive shortstop of his time.

Pirate and Cardinal great, Dick Groat turns 79 today. Dick was a five time All-Star and won the NL MVP in 1960, hitting .325 for the World Champion Pirates.
1960 Topps #258

Groat's .325 batting average was tops in the NL in 1960.

Groat was a standout basketball and baseball player at Duke.  He was the first man to be elected to both the baseball and basketball collegiate Hall of Fames.

Actor/comedian Art Carney was born in Mount Vernon, NY on this date in 1918.

Art will, of course, always be remembered as the good hearted Ed Norton on The Honeymooners.
