The Cubs have named Jamie Quirk as bench coach to our new manager Dale "Nuts" Sveum.
I found this 1989 Fleer card of Quirk back in his playing days.
Jamie spent 11 of his 18 seasons with the Royals. Most recently he was the bullpen coach for the Houston Astros.
Here's a link to the Cubs official press release if you're interested.

Blow Out the Candles -- November 30
The multi-talented Bo Jackson is celebrating his 49th birthday today. One of the greatest, "what might have been" stories in sports, Bo did amaze us while he could.

Blow Out the Candles -- November 29
7 time All-Star Orestes "Minnie" Minoso turns 86 today. Minnie started his career in 1949 with the Indians and finished with the White Sox in 1980 meaning he played in a remarkable 5 decades.
Celebrating his 72nd birthday today, is 3 time All-Star Dick McAuliffe. McAuliffe was also a member of the 1968 Tigers and though he hit only .222 in the Series he did drive in three and scored five times.
Here's Dick facing Bob Gibson. He was the first batter of the series and struck out. He did single in the 6th in a 4-0 loss.
Detroit Tigers great Bill Freehan turns 68 today. Bill was an 11 time All-Star, won 5 Gold Gloves and was a member of the 1968 World Series Champions.

Blow Out the Candles -- November 28
Singer, songwriter, composer, Randy Newman is celebrating his 68th birthday today. I love his wicked sense of humor. Here's his entry from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens
We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them
Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us
We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too
Boom goes London and boom Paris
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono babe
And there'll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now
The Great Nations of Europe had gathered on the shore
they'd conquered what was behind them and now they wanted more
so they looked to the mighty ocean and took to the western sea
The great nations of europe in the 16th century
Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of europe comin through
The Grand Canary Islands first land to which they came
they slaughtered all the canaries there which gave the land its name
there were natives there called guanches, guanches by the score
bullet's, disease the portugese, they weren't there any more
now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
you never seen anyone so gone
there's pictures in a museum, some lines written in a book
but you won't find a live one, no matter where you look
Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of europe comin through
columbus sailed for india found salvidor instead
he shook hands with some indians and soon they all were dead
they got tb and typhoid and athletes foot, diptheria and the flu
'scuse me great nations comin through
balboa found the pacific and on the trail one day
he met some friendly indians whom he was told were gay
soooooooooooooo
he had them torn apart by dogs on religious grounds they say
the great nations of europe were quite holy in their way
now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
you never seen anyone so gone
some bones hidden in a canyon some paintings in a cave
they're no use tryin to save them, there's nothin left to save
hide your wives and daughters, hide your sons as well
with the great nations of europe you never can tell
where you and i are standing on the end of a century
europes have sprung up everyone as even i can see
but there on the horizon is the possiblity
that some bug from out of africa might come for you and me
destroying everything in it's path from sea to shining sea
like the great nations of europe in the 16th century

Garage Sale Pack #16
This summer I bought a bunch of 20-25 card packs (sealed ziplocks) at the local garage sale. Each one was just 25 cents and I could see two cards. I've been opening them one at a time and posting my favorites here. I realize that I'm not going to get any "mojo hits" but so far I've had a lot of fun with them.
Pack sixteen had 23 cards --1 baseball and 22 football.
This pack was kind of a clunker. The Larkin card was on the outside so I was disappointed to find it was the only baseball card in the pack, though it is a nice one and probably worth 25 cents on it's own.
Automatic entry here for anybody on a Chicago championship team. Dennis was on the 1985 Bears.
Another Bear. Cade was a cocky rookie who's mouth wrote checks that his arm couldn't cash.
Mills, a collegiate HOF'er and 5 time Pro Bowl selection continued to coach the Panthers while fighting cancer, helping lead them to the Super Bowl in 2004. His number 51was the first to be retired by the franchise following his passing in the spring of 2005.
Palmer was nicknamed "The Deuce" at Alabama where he was the first player to eclipse 1000 yards receiving in a season. He turned pro after his junior year when he finished third in Heisman voting.
"Nick the Kick" is one of the NFL's all-time elite placekickers. He's the Chief's all-time scoring leader.
Currently a church minister, Aeneas was an 8 time Pro Bowl selection.
A great looking card of a great running back.
Boselli was a 5 time Pro Bowl selection and is in the Jaguars Hall of Fame.
Eugene was the first Korean American to be drafted in the NFL's first round when the Patriots picked him in 1992.
