Blow Out the Candles December 2

Tennis star Monica Seles is celebrating her 40th birthday today.
Monica won 9 Grand Slam singles titles and might have won many more if not for being stabbed in the back (literally) at a tournament in Hamburg, Germanyin 1993.   She recovered from the injuries but was never the same.  I loved the energy she brought to the game.

My Favorite MartianRay Walston was born on this date in 1914.

Ray also played Mr. Applegate (Satan) in the Broadway and film versions of Damn Yankees.

Here's a rarity, Ray "singing" Chim Chim Cher-ee  from Mary Poppins.
The flip side:

Artist Georges Seurat was born in Paris, France on this date in 1859.
Self-portrait

Seurat's most famous painting is A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1886).

"Under a blazing mid-afternoon summer sky, we see the Seine flooded with sunshine... people are strolling, others are sitting or stretched out lazily on the bluish grass."
A Simpson's homage

Seurat's painting was the inspiration for Sondheim and Lapine's Pulitzer and Tony winning Broadway musical , Sunday in the Park with George.   Here's Mandy Patinkin:

More by Seurat:
"They see poetry in what I have done. No. I apply my methods, and that is all there is to it."
"Originality depends only on the character of the drawing and the vision peculiar to each artist."
"Art is harmony. Harmony is the analogy of contrary and of similar elements of tone, of color and of line, conditioned by the dominate key, and under the influence of a particular light, in gay, calm, or sad combinations."

  1. I get to see that Seurat every time I hit the Art Institute.

And I was never a fan of Monica. She always just annoyed me when she was on the court. Talented - yes. But her whole attitude made me not a fan. Not that I want to dismiss that stabbing. That was horrible and really destroyed her career.

    1. I lived in Chicago until recently and also visited the Seurat often. We have a nice framed print of it as well. The day I proposed to my wife (in front of the Bierstadt's Mountain Brook) we saw another couple getting engaged in front of La Grande Jatte. It's the only time I ever saw that happen. Crazy.
I like Monica and it kills me what happened to her. No telling how many more tournaments and Slams she might have won.The grunting was terrible though and it's still a blight on women's tennis.
