Hall of Famer Chick Hafey was born on this date in 1903.

Legendary Celtics center Bill Russell is celebrating his 79th birthday today.
"Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory."
Russell won 11 NBA Championships

Bill was MVP 5 times (1 more than Wilt)

Russell was a 12 time All-Star
"The idea is not to block every shot.  The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot."
In 1966, following Red Auerbach's retirement, Bill Russell became the NBA's first African-American coach.

 In 2009 the NBA honored Russell by re-naming the Finals MVP trophy, the "Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award".  Here's Bill presenting the trophy to Kobe Bryant.

Ballplayer, announcer and TV Personality, Joe Garagiola is celebrating his 87th birthday today.
Joe is in Baseball's Hall of Fame.  He received the Ford Frick award in 1991.
